First United Methodist Church of Honolulu is Hawaii’s original Methodist Church established in 1855, celebrating diversity under the unifying spirit of Christ and seeking leadership in innovative ministries.
Our Faith
What We Believe
The Holy Scriptures
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the primary authority for Christian faith and practice. We gather around Scripture in worship and study to discern Christ's leadership for our lives and ministries.
The Triune God
We believe in one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is the Creator of all things, whose blessings are reflected in the beauty of creation, and who calls us into relationship through grace.
Jesus Christ, the Light of the World
We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, our Savior and Lord, in whom we find redemption and new life. As the Light of the World, Christ illumines our path and unites us as one gathered community under his Spirit.
Grace and Salvation
In the Wesleyan tradition, we believe salvation is the gift of God's grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ. God's grace goes before us, justifies us, and works to make us holy as we grow in love toward God and neighbor.
The Sacraments
We celebrate the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion as outward and visible signs of God's grace. These means of grace draw us into the life of Christ and the fellowship of his Church.
