Located in the heart of Decatur, Alabama, we are a growing, vibrant Episcopal congregation with a sense of mission and vitality.
Our Faith
St. John's is a welcoming Christian community within the Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Communion, valuing tradition, diversity, and thoughtful engagement with faith. Often called 'a middle way,' Anglican identity holds both Catholic and Protestant characteristics simultaneously, embracing inclusivity and a variety of viewpoints.
We affirm the ancient Christian creeds and believe in one God in three persons: God the Father, who created and loves all things; God the Son, Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and was raised to set all people free from sin and death; and God the Holy Spirit, who guides and empowers us as the Body of Christ.
The Church teaches that Holy Scripture contains all things necessary for salvation. Each week our worship is shaped by readings from the Old Testament, a Psalm, the New Testament, and the Gospels, which we hear and reflect upon together.
Guided by the ancient principle 'lex orandi, lex credendi'—the law of prayer is the law of belief—we believe our liturgy in the Book of Common Prayer shapes our faith. Returning week after week to the apostles' teaching, the breaking of bread, and the prayers forms us as a people.

Visiting Our Parish
Free parking is available on-site, with additional street parking nearby. Greeters can help direct you when you arrive.
Children are warmly welcomed. We offer Children's Chapel during worship, plus Sunday School and programs for children and youth, so families can worship together or let little ones engage at their own level.
As a first-time guest, you're invited to fill out a Visitor Card so we can welcome you personally. Our service follows the Book of Common Prayer in two parts: the Word of God (scripture readings, the Gospel, a sermon, the Nicene Creed, and prayers) and Holy Communion, where bread and wine are shared at God's table. Visit our 'What To Expect' page for more, and know that all are welcome here.
We strive to be a welcoming home for everyone. If you have specific accessibility needs, please reach out to the church office ahead of your visit so we can make sure you're comfortably accommodated.
Join us for coffee and fellowship after the service—a relaxed time to meet members of our community and ask any questions you may have.

We celebrate Holy Communion as a central part of our weekly worship. We believe that through this sacrament we truly experience God's grace and presence in a deep and tangible way.
We believe the mission of the Church is to restore all people to unity with God, and that each of us has an integral part in that work. Living out our baptismal covenant, we seek and serve Christ in all persons, strive for justice and peace, and respect the dignity of every human being.
